OLED vs QLED – Which TV Is Best For You?

Black Friday deals are getting close, and with that comes crazy deals on television sets. Upgrading a TV can be overwhelming with all the choices, we put together this quick “Best TVs of 2022” guide for you Starting with the question: “OLED vs QLED TV?”

Difference Between OLED and QLED

There is a lot to know about TV technology. Don’t confuse the different features of a TV: the resolution, or number of pixels, is often referenced as 1080P or now the 4k and 8k resolutions. This means how many pixels are there, so a 4k TV has 4,000 pixels or almost 4 times the number of pixels as a 1080 pixel TV. This means much sharper images and picture quality. But how those pixels activate is the display technology, or OLED, QLED, LED, UHD etc. So what is the difference in QLED or OLED technology?

The main difference in OLED vs QLED technology is in the pixels and backlight. In an OLED TV, the pixels are individually lit whereas in a QLED TV the pixels are activated by a backlight. This gives the QLED an advantage in a bright room as the backlight provides for a brighter picture. However, the crispness of the image performs better in an OLED TV where the individual pixels turn on and off, enhancing the depths of color especially for darker images and colors. If your TV will be used for gaming or fast images, the response time in an OLED TV is much faster than a QLED as well.

Nanocell vs OLED

LG has their Nanocell technology, which is similar to LED technology with the backlight vs the OLED where pixels emit their own light. Like the QLED where there is a backlight, a Nanocell is great in a bright room compared to the OLED. On top of the display sits a nanoparticle screen that absorbs certain unwanted wavelengths and filters for better color definition.

The Nano Cell technology is great, but often an OLED TV is higher quality because it puts out the correct light and color rather than relying on a filter of Nano technology to filter out unwanted wavelengths. Both are great technology to consider but comparing the Nanocell vs OLED, you may opt for the OLED technology. If budget is a consideration, then the Nano Cell technology is far less expensive and delivers a high quality impact to your living space.

Home TV Buying Guide: Questions to ask:

  • What is your budget?

  • How big of a space will the TV be in? What size of TV?
    • A large space may demand a larger TV size, and OLED TVs top out at 75″. A QLED TV can go larger to 85″ or larger
    • If a larger size is a must then a QLED or even projector may be your best option
  • How much light is in the space?
    • QLEDs perform better in a bright space, so if your space is large and bright a QLED TV is a no brainer
  • What types of shows, games will you watch?
    • An OLED TV has a faster response time, better for gaming and action / movies. However if response time isn’t a must, then a QLED TV is a great choice
